A friend is contemplating buying a CD-ROM drive for his 386. I know that there are at least two formats for CDs. What info do I need to pass on the him to assure that he will be buying and staying MPC compliant? What exactly does it *mean* to be "MPC compliant"? Thanx!!

From what I have gleaned so far the drive must be Hi Sierra (?) compatible (almost all are) and therefore can be accessed by the MSCDEX driver software. The drive must also be capable of sustaining a transfer rate of >= 150kb/s to support smooth full motion video. I've also heard talk about access time < 380ms but that does not jive with other information I've seen. For example Tandy sell a MPC system with their own CD ROM which although can transfer at the required rate, has an access time of 1000ms! Go figure! Laurence Chiu
