nident-2.0a should now be available from purdue and its mirror sites
(src.doc.ic.ac.uk in Europe).

nident-2.0a is a minor update to nidentd-2.0, not due to any code
problems (I have had no code bug reports), but due to a set of
faults in the installation documentation. There are no code
changes, so people running it already need not upgrade.

The earlier version had installation problems because I forgot that
my system does not use the standard NeXT group numbers. I have
fixed this and a couple of other minor problems in the
documentation.

nident is a freely available implementation of the RFC931
authentication/identification daemon. This allows a remote machine
to identify the creator of a network link by interrogating the
indentification daemon on the origination machine.

nidentd works well with Carl Edman's new finger program also
available on the archives.

nidentd & RFC931 is not a security panacea, but it can help in
auditing network connections. It really *should* be installed on
any public access internet machines (such as Universities) out of
politeness.

nidentd can be used with the tcp logging & authentication package
posted to comp.sources.misc a while back to allow/disallow
connections on a per-person as well as a per-host basis.

I would appreciate feedback on uses of nidentd.

	Nigel.
