FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE For more information: Pencom Software (512) 343-1111 co-Xist_info@pencom.com NEW VERSION OF PENCOM'S CO-XIST AMONG FIRST SOFTWARE TO SUPPORT NEXTSTEP 3.0 Runs X Applications 5 to 10 Times Faster on NeXT Workstations AUSTIN, 9 November 1992 -- Pencom Software has released a major new version of it's software product, co-Xist 3.0, which will allow NeXT workstation users to display and develop X applications locally or on other hardware platforms. With performance enhancments of up to 5 to 10 times in display speed, co-Xist will address an industry need for faster X applications on NeXT systems. co-Xist 3.0 is Pencom's version of the X Window System (X11R5) and is compatible with NeXTSTEP 3.0, the recently released version of NeXT's object-oriented development environment and graphical user interface. co-Xist 3.0 takes advantage of NeXTSTEP 3.0's new features and performance enhancements, as well as the new features of Motif 1.2 and the latest release of the X Window System, X11R5. According to Chris Chauvin, product manager at Pencom Software, Pencom began working with NeXTSTEP 3.0 several months ago, and has seen dramatic performance improvements with the latest version of NeXT's software. By taking advantage of these enhancements, Chauvin said that X Windows applications running with co-Xist 3.0 can now run from two to five times faster than before, depending on the mode of operation and monitor type. And by taking advantage of co-Xist's new "Take Over Mode" option, users can expect up to 10 times the performance than before. The "Take-Over-Mode" option allows X Windows applications to take over the entire screen, rather than running with NeXTSTEP applications simultaneously. "Running X applications in 'Take-Over-Mode' provides a dramatic increase in speed," said Chauvin. In 'Rootless Windows Mode' (where users can position the X Window as desired on the workstation screen just as they can position NeXTSTEP windows), applications will run up to two times faster than previously on greyscale, and three times faster on color monitors, according to Chauvin. Other new features in co-Xist 3.0 include a client launch panel, support for Motif 1.2 and support for X11R5, the newest version of X Windows software which features the PHIGS Extension to X Windows (PEX). The new font server provided under the distribution of X11R5 is also implemented. By taking advantage of the enhanced localization features offered in NeXTSTEP 3.0, users are now able to adapt the co-Xist user interface to foreign language environments. Currently, the co-Xist interface commands can be changed to French or German. And finally, a client launch panel allows users to specify how and where to launch any X windows application. Pencom Software is a division of Pencom Systems, Inc, a $42 million national technical search and recruiting firm with five offices nationwide. Today as a NeXTedge Partner, Pencom Systems is the only company of its kind to provide the entire suite of resources and training services to the NeXTedge program.
