John, I've printed envelopes of all sizes, shapes, and thicknesses
using my NeXT printer,and in all cases, I've found the method of
greatest reliability is to use the manual feed.  Some envelopes, 
particularly the thicker ones, need a bit of a push to get them
in past what feels like a curve in the track, but once the feeder
gets a good grip after that point, there's no problem.
I don't mind handfeeding them, because I find that the heat often
causes the envelope glues to be activated, so they usually need
to be opened as soon as they've dropped out the other side of
the printer, otherwise they get glued permanently shut in several
spots.
