Really?  You can get a compiled ViewGif from sonata as:

	pub/next/2.0/bin/ViewGif2.Z

I don't like to keep things as just source.  This binary
works under 3.0 (well it just did for me). 

I recommend ImageViewer instead since it does more:

	pub/next/2.0/bin/ImageViewer0.9e.tar.Z
