Various people have expressed skepticism about the public status of
these fonts because of their high quality. I don't know the actual
status and have not downloaded the fonts, but that reason --
quality -- is a silly one to arouse such concern.

One of the best C compilers (GNU) is free.
Two of the best mail-readers (mh and elm) are free.
The two best newsreaders (nn and trn) are free.
Top-notch versions of most Unix-originated utilities (GNU) are free.
Much powerful image-conversion and compression software is free.
Some of the best communications software is free.
Some of the best interpreted languages (perl) are free.

I'll refrain from overgeneralizing from this or getting preachy,
but certainly higher-than-normal quality would seem to suggest that
the software is free, rather than the reverse.
