Sybase Package for NeXT
#4140
Author: Mark T. Dornfeld

In the directory /NextLibrary/Packages/ThirdParty there is a *.pkg file
called Sybase_DB-Library.pkg. First of all, what is this package. The
intaller complains about an error reading an "info" file and cannot do
anything with the package.

We would like to get Sybase and docs up and running as soon as possible.
Is there still a runtime/limited license on the NeXT, or do we have to buy
a license from Sybase?

Any help/pointers would be appreciated.

I have found that this package seems to be empty on other machines that have
been upgraded to 3.0 thus causing the error. However, it exists on the 3.0
CD-ROM, I think in the /NextCD directory. So erase
/NextLibrary/Packages/ThirdParty to avoid future confusion (after looking
inside the package to verify that it's empty :-)

This package contains only the Sybase client library and related stuff. To run
Sybase, a second package, Sybase_SQL_Server-limited.pkg (or the unlimited
version) must be available. This was distributed with NeXTSTEP 1.0 with a free
upgrade to a NS 2.0 version (which works fine under 3.0).

If you don't have the server package, then you must license it from Sybase.
The limited (~5 simultaneous client-server connections maximum) version used to
sell for around $600.

I'm looking at a November 1992 NeXT price list (from NeXT, of course), and
I see that NeXT is selling the Sybase Limited SQL Server (part number
N5521) for $1995 list.

Must not be bundled any more.

SCSI CD-Rom messages

Hi.

I'm wondering if anyone has run across this problem before. I've installed
my CD-rom drive just fine but I keep getting console messages of the following
nature:

sd2 (4,0): ERROR op:0x2a sd_state:4 scsi status:0x0

sd2 (4,0): sense key:0x5 additional sense code:0x20

SCSI Block in error = 0 (front porch)

If anyone knows the reason or a solution to this problem I'd appreciate
it if they would drop me a line.

Please respond by email.
