making suffix file icon?

    Is there a way to make certain files have a paricular icon.  
eg.  .tiff files have a particular icon, .tar files have one.

   Say I have a program I created (not necessarily with IB) that creates
files with the extension .ext, how do I assign all files that I created and
might still create, an icon that I choose.
