Hehe :)
Re: The subject of hardware. All PC's are not created equal! When you
buy a NeXT you're buying quite a nice hunk of hardware. Sure, you can get
a good 486 cheap, but if you really want a consistent and dependable box,
you have to pay a bit more. That goes for PCs, workstations, whatever...

Re: Software Pricing
Let's not count our chickens just yet. IMHO the developer package will be
available at a lower price through many channels. In the PC market,
nothing sells for list price...

At minimum I think NeXT will do something to give current developers a
break.

Let's face it - NeXTStep is a seriously good piece of software, and a lot
of (expensive) work went into it.

A year ago, when I was preparing my employers system to do PC development
(in MS-DOS), it cost over $1000 for the compiler/debugger, video library,
network API library, utilities, editor, etc. Not including the cost of
the file server software which we already had.

Now if you want to develop software on a cheap system, you can pick up the
Microsoft C Compiler (which BTW, I think is a pretty good compiler)
bundled with the MS Windows SDK for a couple hundred bucks...

Or deal with the mishmosh of free unix stuff out there.
