Trouble compiling gnuplot

I am trying to compile gnuplot version 3.2 on a NeXT Station running
NeXTStep version 3.0.  When I type "make next" I get the following
error:
/NextDeveloper/Headers/remote/transport.h:54: illegal keyword
selector, missing `)' after `id'

line 54 in transport.h reads: 
- encodeUsing:(id <NXEncoding>)portal;


Does anyone know how to work around this?
