Is it very simple to create a window, and use it as the stdin and out?

I'm wanting to make a program that uses a window for text... and call
up graphics in another window.

could I just create a window, put in the text field, connect it to a
'home-made' object, and use a normal printf() ?

Could somebody point me in the right direction?

Thanks!!
