It's as grim as I suspected. It was a clever piece of NeXT internal
software, "compressHelp" which stuck the entire Help hierarchy into an
IXStore, readable by the NXHelpPanel class and the usual IX tools. Since
it's internal, it won't see the light of day, alas.

The reason we wanted it was to reduce the lenghthy install time required
when you have hundreds, nay, thousands, of tiny files for your help.
[Since the new .rtfd standard, each little graphic is a file.] Now, this
wrecks havoc on the Installer.app, because it uses tar instead of gnutar,
and when you have a deep help hierarchy, you run off of tar's path limit.

Furthermore, before we removed some graphics, we had about 2000 files in
our single application. You can start to chew up inodes fast at that rate!

So the answer is wait for NeXT to bestow compressHelp on the rest of us.
