I'd also be interested in knowing whether this is somehow still possible.

There used to be a "Miscellaneous" Inspector subpanel in the 2.1 IB
which allowed
the size to be specified and also the name of the object. In your app,
you could 
then locate an object using its owner and name. 

The concept of a name is obviously still there since I've converted some
2.1 .nib
files to 3.0 format and can still locate the objects within them, but
the 3.0 IB
doesn't appear to let you name the objects any more.

Somewhat frustrating...
