What is a "Timeout" SoundKit error?

My app has a bug where it tries to play a sound ([mySound play :self]) but the  
playback is aborted with a "Timeout" error.  This occurs completely  
predictably.

Anybody know what this "Timeout" error means and how to prevent it?

I'm running NeXTStep 3.0.
