1. The book was officially released today. The earlier release announcement was the publishing equivalent of vaporware. 2. Springer-Verlag expects to ship our initial order for 45 copies by Wednesday at the latest, and we will re-ship them to our Usenet customers as soon as they arrive. PRICE INCREASE 3. Re-orders will necessarily be in smaller quantities, since I'm not willing to risk getting stuck with 30 copies on the shelf here. That means a much smaller discount. Already, 39 of our 45 copies have been ordered by Usenet people. Thus, our $37 price is good only for the next 6 orders to arrive here by e-mail. After that, the price goes up to $40 including U.S. delivery, with a $10 charge for foreign shipments. After giving effect to the price increase, Washington State orders will require $3.28 sales tax ($43.28 total). If you intend to order at all, I'd suggest doing it as soon as you read this. Even then, please let me know whether it's okay to handle your order at the $40 price if six people beat you to it. The $40 price is still $2.45, or almost 6%, less than the publisher's price with U.S. shipping, and you get the benefit of convenient, accurate, and reliable ordering by e-mail. I really doubt, given this publisher's discount schedule, that the book will be available in any bookstore for less than list price. In addition, I'm no longer willing to accept orders except by e-mail, as they are much more disruptive to my workday, which is supposed to consist primarily of brilliant investing, reading these books, and writing great applications, not selling books. If you are afraid to send your credit card number by e-mail, please phone the publisher and place your order there for $42.45. 4. I'll end with an excerpt from my earlier posting: > NeXTSTEP Programming - STEP ONE: Object-Oriented Applications > Simson L. Garfinkel and Michael K. Mahoney > Publisher's List Price: $39.95; U.S. Shipping: $2.50 The book, as described in comp.sys.next.misc by an early reviewer, Claude W. Anderson: > In mid-January, I was faced with the reality that in 7 weeks I was > scheduled to teach NeXTSTEP programming to a group of 70 freshmen > . . . . My first two weeks with the book was sufficient to take me > from total trepidation about doing the course to a reasonable level > of confidence (and competence, I hope). That in itself says a lot > for the book. . . . I think they did well to concentrate on > getting the user comfortable with a few classes rather than trying > to be encyclopedic. The encyclopedic documentation already exists; > the tour guide is what is needed (and provided). [Note that if you _want_ the encyclopedic documentation, I'm still selling the official NeXTSTEP 3.0 Developer's Library, too, at an attractive price.] To order, if you want to, send me your: name shipping address telephone numbers (specifying day/evening as appropriate) fax number (if available) e-mail address credit card number and expiration date AND PLEASE TELL ME WHAT YOU ARE ORDERING since I'm still selling the NeXT Doc Set too. Please be careful doing this; we got two bad credit card numbers (both from a single digit mis-typed) and two bad e-mail addresses among the Next Docs orders. No big deal, but it slows things down and means extra work for both of us. On this book, we'll accept overseas orders for $10 additional. -- Irving_Wolfe@Happy-Man.com Happy Man Corp. 206/463-9399 x101 4410 SW Pt. Okay, all the $37 copies have been sold. Please save me the trouble of writing back to you, by acknowledging in your future orders that the price is $40, shipping included to U.S. destinations. If you wish you'd been in the initial order, next time _act_ instead of contemplating, especially if you're dealing with a known fool like me, who gives good deals to begin with. If the news just didn't reach you in time, pay a few bucks for a decent connection. As I said: >3. Re-orders will necessarily be in smaller quantities, since I'm >not willing to risk getting stuck with 30 copies on the shelf here. >That means a much smaller discount. >The book, as described in comp.sys.next.misc by an early reviewer, >Claude W. Please be careful doing this; we got two bad credit card numbers (both from a single digit mis-typed), two missing cities, and two bad e-mail addresses among the orders to date. No big deal, but it slows things down and means extra work for both of us. That's the kind of time-waste that forced me to raise the price. Overseas orders are $10 additional. All future orders should preferably be by regular e-mail, not fax, phone, NextMail (unless you're including your fingerprints, voiceprint, or wedding photo), etc. -- Irving_Wolfe@Happy-Man.com Happy Man Corp. 206/463-9399 x101 4410 SW Pt.
