Highlighting an area with no light gray or white?

Anyone have suggestions on how to go about highlighting text which
has a black background and dark gray text? i.e. text which has no
white or light grey.  The highlight operator on compositerect seems
to totally lose with this respect, particularly when you start using color.

or am I just being braindead?
