Dear objective-c friends, I have gcc 2.2.2 installed on NeXT and Sun machines. Is any experience out there with compiling Objective-C code on Sun-machines using gcc? I am missing the basic class Object in the distribution. Any suggestions how to create Object.h compatible to NeXT and the basic runtime-library? Thank you in advance! - Klaus ******************************************************************* GMD Fokus (German National Research Institute for Computer Science) Klaus Hofrichter Hardenbergplatz 2 D-1000 Berlin 12 E-Mail X.400 hofrichter@fokus.berlin.gmd.dbp.de (NeXTmail ok) E-Mail SMTP kho@fokus.gmd.de (NeXTmail ok) Voice +49 30 254 99 211 Fax +49 30 254 99 202 *******************************************************************

The Free Software Foundation is currently seeking support from NeXT to release enough details about the Objective-C run-time system to make exactly this possible. I have not heard that NeXT has been very forthcoming. I do not know if this is because NeXT is afraid, or because NeXT is overworked. -- Geoffrey S. Knauth, Marble Associates, Inc. This is one of the hot issues in NeXT third party developer land. There is a concerted effort to describe the advantages to NeXT and to product developers about supporting (in some fashion that works) the availability of the run-time stuff and development tools NeXT has developed on other platforms. By development tools I don't mean AppKit and Interface Builder (someday, maybe) but the necessary linking and format stuff. Please, if you have something to add beyond porting of apps, expanded market, and such then email your most cogent arguement or post it. It will get into the best channels for trying to make this happen. Mark R. Thomsen
