Very high speed graphics

I have a need to create very high speed graphics on a NeXTstation
color. By very high speed, I mean that I need to be able to blit
multiple bitmaps in the range of 500x500 pixels onto a View (or just
onto the screen anywhere, the appkit and Display Postscript are way to
slow for what I propose) and move them smoothly around the screen.
Now I know how to access video memory directory (thanks to the
ScreenMunger demos on sonata.cc.purdue.edu) and there are some nice
fast graphics I can get running that way, but, frankly, they're
nowhere near fast enough. For example, I can smoothly move the entire
NeXT screen around the display, wrapping around the corners, but the
movement, while smooth, is very roughly 2-3 pixels per second. I'd like
something more like 30-50 pixels per second.

I am an experienced programmer, but frankly I've never been a
low-level graphics programmer. Could somebody offer some suggestions,
either in general technique, book references (not NeXT specific
obviously) or (best yet) specific programming examples for any
bitmapped display system? I've seen this question come up a few times
before, but never seen any real answer. There's tons of horsepower
under the hood of this computer (though no dedicated hardware but a
too-slow blitter), and I feel I should be able to do better than I'm doing,
considering that my old Apple ][ could.

Thanks, please send e-mail as I am usually behind on this newsgroup. I
will gladly summarize if I get any responses.
