NXBrowser: programmatically can't size or change background gray

I thought I'd use a bare-bones browser (1 column, no scrollers, no buttons) as
a quick way to display short lenghts of text on separate lines in a view. I can
load the matrix fine. The browser method sizeToFit won't adjust the browser to
just contain the rows in the matrix nor adjust it's width to show the widest
text segment in a cell. I've tried sizing the matrix before sizing the browser
but still no luck. I'd also like the cells to adjust to the widest text.

Additionally, I can't change the background gray of the matrix or cells from
the light gray. Setting transparency seems ineffective also. I set these before
loading the column, should they be set after? (Seems to me it should be
effective at either time)

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance
