Extending IconBuilder is a snap. Read the article "An introduction to extensible programming" by Jeff Martin and Joshua Doenias in the Fall 1991 Next On Campus. You can find an electronic copy in /pub/next/Newsletters/OnCampus/NOCFall91 on sonata.cc.purdue.edu. It describes a program called DynaPaint which bears a striking resemblance to IconBuilder. After you've done that, open up the .ptools and .pfilters in IconBuilder.app. Take a look at the nibs. Give you any ideas? Try looking at the running IconBuilder with AppInspector. Get any more ideas? If you can't figure it out from there, you can ftp a sample tool I wrote this evening -- Splat. It's Splat.compressed in /pub on geom.umn.edu. To all of those whiners out there: Please not one more "Boo hoo... Steve took Icon away and won't play with me..." post. IconBuilder is not only a cool program (how many other extensible apps do you know of?), but an excellent way to teach developers who don't rtfm about NXBundles. It doesn't do everything, BUT THAT'S THE POINT! YOU get to extend it. Flame them for lack of documentation, not for the app. Long Live IconBuilder! Linus Upson lupson@geom.umn.edu

We "get" to extend it? Good clean fun if you don't have to do something else for a living. I can appreciate it being extensible, but it should have come with enough "extensions" to really replace the utility it's replacing. Thanks for your tips and your sample extension though. OK, everyone -- how about concise summaries of the tools/features that you consider essential to make this program usable. EMail works. So does posting. I'll make one big summary; I bet that we can solve the biggest problems in relatively short order. Gordon> Well no offense, but when I need to draw an icon for an app Gordon> that I'm writing I'm seldom in the mood to sit around and Gordon> write MORE code so I can do so. We "get" to extend it? Good Gordon> clean fun if you don't have to do something else for a living. I also mean no offense, but I have a queastion for you Gordon: Why do you program? Is this just a job, or what? If it _is_ just a job, then surely your time is worth buying a "real" tool to do your icons. Shouldn't you guys be using a graphic artist, anyway? Gordon> I can appreciate it being extensible, but it should have come Gordon> with enough "extensions" to really replace the utility it's Gordon> replacing. IconBuilder replaces nothing. Icon.app was a demo. It was completely unsupported, no promises. It broke under 3.0, and the original author has left the company to pursue other interests (if Sulley is to be beleived, his initials were even removed from the 3.0 icons :-( ...). I think that NeXT made a good faith effort to get us something, and went one step further by giving us an opportunity to make a community project out of it. If that is not enough for all of you that are upset, your comments are probably welcome at NeXT. Like the plague, I imagine...
