   I've just upgraded our cube (68040/40 Meg RAM/ND 20 Meg/400 Meg HD)
from 2.1 to 3.0. It was *Very* easy.

To answer your question, it is much slower. Many aspect of the
user interface are slower: scrolling of text, windows movement, many
graphics operations (done with Create for example), etc.

   I've worked with 3.0 for a week. I surprised myself a couple
of times swearing about the speed, or wondering about what was
going on due to slow response. I would rate the *perceived*
performance degradation of the interface at about 20%.
But it's still faster than Windows for PC. :-)

On the other hand, the color environment provide by 3.0 is
the most professional looking, balanced and beautiful I ever
worked on. I really think it is the best UI around, miles
in front of any offering. It is awesome. (i.e. I like it)

Bottom line: it is time for new hardware. For example:

	Display postscript accelerator
	Multiple CPU board
ND i860 usage (seem's to be sitting idle in our ND)

A *bold* step to faster processor/architecture is needed.
Since NeXT is positionning itself as a software company,
just happening to make hardware, they should target high
performance processor. I'd like to see NS running on a
couple of R4000...

As a side note, I wonder if NS running on a 50MHz 486 will
benefit of some speed improvement over the standard 33MHz 040?

   Bye, Daniel.
