Can somebody with a >NeXTstation mono with 20M of memory comment on the relative speeds of >2.1 and 3.0? >-- >Doug DeJulio >ddj+@cmu.edu - Well, that's exactly what I have! Overall, 3.0 seems speedier to me than 2.1, however it is slower in different places. Often unexpectedly so, some of the window manipulation is overly cute ( when you iconify a window you get a series of descending outline boxes to the icon). I'm beginning to suspect that it has to do with how the memory is swapped. You pay a larger cost the first time you do something, but everytime you use it after that it's MUCH faster. Also filemem now has a man page, check it out! I also have a `030 cube with 12meg and 3.0 is pretty painful on that, the difference between the two machines is much more noticable than before. I suspect most of the people complaining have color slabs with 16mb. Even with 32mb the color slab is just too slow.... The Turbo's approach spiffiness, but I have yet to see any color workstation from ANY VENDOR be of use with less than 32 mb. One thing I would suggest is that you build everything from scratch, i.e. follow the directions for building a disk from scratch from the CD. Update.app is well done, but the machine was noticably faster after I rebuilt the entire filesystem. - Anyway, Now we finally have a REAL 3d Graphics library!!!!!! Of course we don't quite have the hardware to really make it fly. I think the apps that will come out of this will make everyone forget about any 2.1 ``features''.... - My only real bitch about 3.0 is the lack of any authentication in the Window Server, it's either EVERYBODY or nobody. - Booker C.
