Well...  this is just a guess since my 3.0 has yet to arrive, but I'd
be willing to bet that if Mma was down under 3.0 there's be a lot more
people hollering than just you.

What is happening here is that the front end works, as you note, but it
is not accessing the Kernel properly.  Just as a guess, on your old
systems did you do the "gourmet fix" ?  I.e. did you make directories
in NextApps and link them to the new MMa directories in LocalApps?  If
you did then it's possible that the re-installation has Mma confused as
to the location of the kernel (This happened to me when I upgraded to
2.04.5, just as you describe).  If this is the problem then just remove
the "fake" directories from NextApps, re-run MathInstall, and then do
the gourmet fix again.  All should be fine.

If this isn't the problem then I don't know, but it's probably something
similar.
