Here in the Atmospheric Science department, and in any other geophysical science department, we tend to plot lots of things over the surface of the Earth. I would love to be able to render a "field" like, for example, surface air temperature, on the sphere (e.g., warm = red, cool = blue, etc.), and then roam around the sphere at will, or possibly "spin" it to see the whole picture. Question: Are any of the new 3D graphics packages just coming out capable of "plotting" scientific fields on the sphere in this way? If so, please fill me in. I realize that "plotting" is not the intended purpose of this software, but if the software can be adapted to plotting that would be great!
