From the information that I have received, Appsoft Image does not "tile" its memory usage, so memory consumption is proportional to the size of the files opened for editing. You should confirm this with Appsoft, since we don't have a copy of Image for testing. Our forthcoming product, Photosynthesis, uses a memory management model based on "windowing" or "tiling" the image, so you only use memory for what's being displayed on the screen. The underlying engine was developed for use on small-memory systems like Macintosh as well as Sun workstations, so this has been a priority in its design. In our experience testing it, opening many-megabyte image files does not cause the swap file to grow. Photosynthesis, for those who don't know, is a full-featured image editing program that we are bringing to market. It is based on the Artisan engine from MediaLogic. Look for Photosynthesis to be available in coming months for $195.00 suggested retail. We don't have an exact release date for it yet.
