Hi:

I recently posted a request for help on Sybase and have gotten a litte
further, but I am still in trouble.

1) The Sybase that I am using is version 4.0.2 shipped with NeXTStep 2.x
as /NextLibrary/Packages/ThirdParty.orig/Sybase_DB-Library.pkg, not with
1.0 as I earlier reported.

2) Upon my efforts and upon review of Doug Clapp's "The NeXT Bible", I
have noticed that the "Sybase" which was shipped with NeXTStep v 1.0 was
Sybase v. 4.0. However, version 4.0 of "Sybase" has files that version
4.0.2 does not. Version 4.0.2 looks like:

next12csc> pwd
/afs/.Automount/nd.edu/next_mach30/usr/sybase
next12csc> ls -l
total 23
drwxr-xr-x 2 sybase 2048 Oct 12 1990 bin/
drwxrwxrwx 2 sybase 2048 Oct 10 1990 database/
drwxr-xr-x 3 sybase 6144 Oct 12 1990 doc/
drwxr-xr-x 2 sybase 2048 Oct 12 1990 include/
drwxr-xr-x 3 sybase 2048 Oct 12 1990 install/
-rw-rw-rw- 1 sybase 545 Jan 3 1990 interfaces
drwxr-xr-x 2 sybase 2048 Nov 13 14:46 lib/
drwxr-xr-x 2 sybase 2048 Oct 12 1990 msgs/
drwxr-xr-x 3 sybase 2048 Oct 12 1990 sample/
drwxr-xr-x 2 sybase 2048 Oct 12 1990 scripts/

It does not however have any of the executatbles in /usr/sybase/intall
that v. 4.0 does such as intallserver and startserver. Moreover the
"samples" in .../sample which rely upon things in .../install that aren't
there.

My questions are:

A) Is the "Sybase" 4.0.2 the whole enchilata or some subpart that does
not include SQL Server but only DB-Library ?

B) What is an SQL "server" anyway ?

C) Assuming that you do not have write permission to /usr/sybase and wish
to keep your own personal interfaces file in your home directory, what do
you need to have in this file and how do you set the enviroment variables
etc. so you don't get:

Operating-system error:
        Connection refused
DB-Library: Unable to connect: SQL Server is unavailable or does not
exist.
