There were several suggestions to this post. But the most obvoius (maybe not  
practicable, I don't know what finish universities policies are), namely using  
uucp for BOTH mail AND news wasn't mentioned. All you need is a uucp 'account'  
on the universities side, a uucp password, a good uucp software (try taylor  
from the archives) and a propper sendmail.cf and off you go! Mail and news will  
work as if you were on the net, just that the responses will be delayed.
