Thanks to all who responded to my inquiry as to why the DSP might have
suddenly stopped working on my NeXTStation Turbo Color running NeXTStep
2.2. From the number of people who responded, it appears this is not an
uncommon occurrence. I am therefore posting a follow-up.

The answer as to what went wrong is that if you load the CD-ROM TOOLS
upgrade preparation diskette that comes with the NeXTStep 3.0 upgrade kit,
it installs a new kernel. Most NeXT apps continue to work OK, but the DSP
is one that breaks. Some people told me they also found their printer was
reporting it was out of paper, the system crashed when they tried to copy
a file from a DOS diskette, and other forms of aberrant behavior after
loading the CD-ROM TOOLS diskette.

Why, you might ask, would one run the CD-ROM TOOLS if you weren't going to
complete the upgrade at that time? The fundamental answer is that you are
given no warning it's going to install a new kernel. Most respondents
said they were just curious. They clicked on the icon, were at little
startled to see the "Installing kernel ..." message, then stopped when
they were asked if they wanted to proceed to actually perform the
installation of NeXTStep 3.0. Since everything seems to still work OK,
they weren't too concern. Then they started to notice there was no sound,
etc. In our case, we were trying to upgrade from the NeXTStep 3.0 CD in a
CD player connected to a Sun on our net. We ran the CD-ROM TOOLS diskette
to get at the NeXT CD tools so we could see if we could read the CD (we
couldn't, and finally gave up and connected the player directly to the
NeXT).

There are apparently two solutions. The one we used was to complete the
NeXTStep 3.0 installation. The other, which was suggested to me by several
respondents but which we didn't try, is to copy /odmach to /sdmach and
reboot.

I spoke to NeXT Technical Support on two separate occasions about this
problem, and both technicians said they had no report of this behavior.
They asked that I submit a bug report to NeXT, which I did. I haven't
heard back from any of the NeXT systems engineers as to an official
solutions.
