Mail.app won't read mail in spool dir

When I start up Mail.app, it won't read the new mail that has come in.
Even when I press New Mail, it doesn't do it.  When I hit Compact, the
app shuts down.  I have the proper permissions set on my mail in the
spool dir and the proper dirs set up for ail.app, but this still
occurs.  Is there any way to fix this?
