In the absence of such aforethought, does there exist any kind unix
programmers out there who can create a program so that my linebreaks
(and any other nuances of how unix and macs treat text files) are
preserved when I start a text only file on one platform and finish it
on another?
try putting these two lines in your .cshrc file:
alias mac2unix "tr '\015' '\012'"
alias unix2mac "tr '\012' '\015'"
then you can say
mac2unix <the-mac-file >the-unix-file
unix2mac <the-unix-file >the-mac-file
this takes care of the linebreaks; as long as you stick to ascii there
shouldn't be any other problems.
