I'm not sure that I ever posted about this; I apologize if this is a repeat. I've written a simple app for fine-tuning portions of TeX documents. It provides a window into which you can type or paste TeX code, and as you make changes there, they are reflected a few seconds later in the TeXview window. There's also a handy, extensible reference to a few of the odd symbols whose names I can never remember. It's a bit oriented toward LaTeX, but it's also usable with other TeX variants. Unfortunately, it will not work if your home directory is in AFS. (If you don't know what this means, it probably doesn't apply to you.)
