Hmm, I went ahead and used Installer to put on the package  
/NextCD/Packages/NeXTTeX.pkg in hopes of getting the newer tex...

well, now the tex doesn't work at all...gives me:

This is CTeX, NeXT Version 3.141
(Fatal format file error; I'm stymied)

So I tried running initex by hand by looking at what goes on in the Install_TeX  
script from the earlier relases...still no go...

anyone have any clues?
