Help! I have uncovered a strange problem on my 2.1 system. I have a user called "janet" who can send mail to other users, but cannot read mail. I have done all the usual things like checking to see that the spool file /usr/spool/mail/janet is readable. /usr/ucb/Mail works just fine for this user. Sendmail logs a good transaction when mail is send to user "janet" and the message actually appears in /usr/spool/mail/janet. I got really frustrated and backed up all of "janets" files, deleted the user "janet" and reinstalled the user "janet". Any mail sent to "janet" including the preinstalled message from Steve Jobs shows up the first time Mail is run by "janet". If the "new mail" button is pressed, you get a beep, as expected. Now, if you delete the old mail from the Active.mbox and exit Mail, the next time you run Mail, you cannot receive mail, and if you press the "new mail" button, nothing happens. You get no beep and no new mail. If you send a message to yourself, it does not appear in the Active.mbox even though it shows up in the /usr/spool/mail/janet file and sendmail has logged the transaction with no errors. You can see the message with /usr/ucb/Mail with no difficulty. I have deleted and reinstalled user "janet" twice and seen the same symptoms. There are four other users on the system who can send and receive mail without any problems. What the heck is going on here? Is something inside Mail.app mangled?
