Configuring Mail.app?
#1375

Hi,
I'm trying to configure Mail.app to send and receive mail. I have a station
on a local non-netinfo network and the one machine that's hooked to the outside
world is not a NeXT. I can send and receive mail, but only with some bugs.
The bugs are as follows. When I send mail from the NeXT, my header doubles my
domain name (should be ludwig.pmad.uic.edu ; shows up as ludwig.pmad.uic.edu.pm
ad.uic.edu). Also, the only way I can receive mail is if I put my entire name
as the host name in NetManager. That is, if I put "ludwig" alone as the host
name in NetManager, then I get host name configuration errors when I try to
send mail to myself from another machine. If I put "ludwig.pmad.uic.edu" as
the hostname in NetManager, then I can receive mail, but my prompt in Terminal
shows up as "ludwig.pmad.uic.edu>". If the hostname is only "ludwig", the
header doubling and Terminal prompt problems go away, but I can't receive mail.

What do I do?

Do I need to create a mailhost with NetInfoManager?

Which sendmail config file should I create a link to? Right now I have a
symbolic link from sendmail.mailhost.cf to sendmail.cf.

I need help. Thanks in advance.

It is best to use senmail.subsidiary.cf as your configuration file in your
kind of situation. Define an alias for your mail provider's hostname,
called mailhost, and it will be used to handle all locally unresolvable
mail addresses. A similar situation can be solved using
sensdmail.mailhost.cf if you need to: near the end of the file is a
comment about 'pass all other explicit domain names up the ladder': do
what it says.

I changed the D macro at the start of the file to: Dj$w ; this prevents
duplicating domain names in your address.

I haven't seen the problem that you have had with receiving mail; you
could probably define a hostname alias with that name for your local
machine.
