I just upgraded to NS3.0, and tried this to see if I could pep it up a bit... I end up with "init exited" (as it did also with NS2.1), and it obviously doesn't boot. 1.) Go in the ROM-Monitor (read the Admin-Ref for how to do that)
2.) Change the bootparameter ("p")
sd- nbu=32 # or any other number, I use 96 (=0x60).
(With 32MB, I'd use 128 buffers...)
(This also works for numbers >99, nbuf=... does not.)
It will speed the I/O up, BUT (!) remember that you risk more when your machine
crashes!
Have fun, Gerhard.

Ideas, anyone? I didn't had any problems to increase the mach buffers. The correct syntax is bsd- nbu=128 e.g. The best is to reserve about 5 % of your memory for mach buffers. I have a Monochrome NeXTstation with 20 MB RAM. So I adjusted the buffers to 128 (8KB * 128 = 1MB) and I've got a better performance. When you set the buffers to values > 255 you will get problems. To make these changes permanent set change the boot command in the NMI with the 'p' command. boot: sd ? sd- nbu=128 That will work. -- +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Stati Marinos | Phone : +49 721 37 71 78 Marinos EDV - Consulting | Fax : +49 721 37 71 79 Gartenstr. 2 | E-Mail: emarinos@marcon.ka.sub.org
