Indexing ~/Mailboxes under 3.0?

We are having trouble indexing a user's ~/Mailboxes directory under 3.0. The objective is to be able to use the Librarian to find all the mail messages that refer to a particular topic. However, the obvious procedure of dragging ~/Mailboxes into the Librarian and creating an index doesn't seem to work -- all queries on the index fail. Is there some particular reason NeXT mail files can't be indexed? Or is there some conceptual leap I'm not making? Any ideas or pointers into TFM would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Librarian doesn't understand the structure of mbox's. However, WAIS
understands it just fine. Download v1.9 of NeXTWAIS from the archives and use
it for indexing mboxes, news, etc. It works very well. (The latest release of
NeXTWAIS is/was broken wrt reading mboxes; I don't know if it has been fixed
yet.)
