Why doesn't MMA draw ASCII graphs?

I'm running MMA on a NeXT with 2.1 and can't get MMA to draw the
graphs in ASCII when I'm logged in from a vt100 or dumb terminal.
I've seen it done elsewhere, but I can't get my version (2.0) to do
it.  How can this be installed so it produces the right output type
for the terminal being used?
