Time-based Media Standard

A number of people have suggested that the NeXT platform could use a
time-based media standard. The usual reference point is QuickTime with
most people adding "but better!". The current issue of NeXTWORLD echoes
this thought in the up-and-coming section of their Ten Most Wanted list.

Well it turns out that Metrosoft is in a position to put the objects for
such a standard together. We are developing most of what is required as
the core of our MetroTracks product and an upcoming multimedia graphics
package.

The time-base is relatively sophisticated (particularly compared to
QuickTime) in that it supports commercial synchronization standards such
as SMPTE, MTC, DTL, etc.

The metaphor we are considering is more generalized than that of a "movie"
(although it obviously does support sequential events) and expandable.

We are highly interested in ideas that other developers, researchers and
end-users would have for such a standard, and in finding out how open
other multimedia developers are to embracing a common standard, and
possibly utilizing a common set of core objects. If there is sufficient
interest and agreement we will put forth a strawman spec for further
feedback.

Please send any comments via e-mail.
