UI suggestion: Differences Panel

Now that "gdb" has been integrated into Edit, wouldn't it be real nifty to have

"diff" integrated as well? Sometimes you have to go thru diffs by hand, and Edit doesn't make it fun. More naive, GUI-bound users don't yet have any intelligent way to compare documents.

The "Differences Panel" would work kind of like the Find Panel, except that it
would highlight the subsequent differing chunks in each of
two windows (the
main document window and the one for another document selected in the
Differences Panel). This Panel could have an API like all the others, and
become a standard part of NeXTSTEP.

Whaddaya say, NeXT?

Cool idea. Maybe it should be a MetroTool...

:-)

I have heard that /usr/sbin/gdiff on the SGI is awesome, somebody
interested in making a "diff" object should check that out. it uses
multiple different colors to indicate "in 1st doc not in 2nd", "in 2nd,
not first", and "only in 1st/2nd". It also has a real nice way to move
things from one file to another. I agree that a neXT object usable by any
application for "diffing" would be very nice.
