The problem was in my sendmail.cf file. The solution is to change the "official host name" in /etc/sendmail/sendmail.mailhost.cf from "Dj$?m$w.$m|$w$." to "Dj$w" and make sure that sendmail.cf is linked to sendmail.mailhost.cf. Thanks to Gregory Lampshire, Pierce Cantrell, and Garance A. Drosehn for their quick help.
