How to recover files from a corrupted file system.

The filesystem on the internal hard drive on our NeXTstation has been
corrupted. The dump program attempted to dump the drive onto itself.
Although the dump was aborted quickly, it was apparently not aborted
before the process had begun to write on the hard drive. This drive was
our boot device and, short of devine intervention, will have to be
rebuilt. At least I cann't see an alternative to rebuilding it.

Unfortunately, this dump would have been the first back-up of
the drive. We would like to back-up all of the files on the drive that
are still intact (which should be almost everything). I have two
questions:

	1) What are the chances of repairing the filesystem
sufficiently to mount the drive? For example, would 'fsck -b'
be a reasonable thing to try? I assume that the primary
superblock was at least partially overwritten. On the other
hand, this could do more damage.

	2) If the filesystem cann't be repaired sufficiently to be
mounted (which is likely), are there any utilities that would
allow us to copy files from the disk?

Any advice would be appreciated. If anyone knows of a worse disaster I
wouldn't mind knowing about it. Misery loves company!
