We use a CD-ROM database that, because of its data format (weirdly compressed, and I'm not a cryptographer) can only be used with the DOS software it comes with. (SoftPC won't handle this situation.) In the past, we'd kept a PC in a corner of the office just for this database, but we wanted to change things so users could access the data from their own NeXTs at their desks. Our solution -- which worked, hence this posting -- was to get OS/2 and its NFS-TCP/IP add-on and a ethernet card for the PC. Since IBM's OS/2 can emulate both DOS and Windows, as well as running in normal mode as a real operating system, this had turned out to be an inexpensive and robust solution to our problem. I suspect it may be a reasonable way of dealing with lots of other situations as well, and most of us have a suitable machine sitting around or can acquire one at little cost. -- Irving_Wolfe@Happy-Man.com Happy Man Corp. 206/463-9399 x101 4410 SW Pt.
