Irving's advice is good. If you must combine services, make sure the server has lots of memory, and discourage users of that machine from using Mathematica. We have a 32 Mb 25 Mhz slab that acts as Homedirectory server, mail server, primary netinfo server, ypserver, xntp server, and print server for 11 other machines. It's noticably sluggish when a big print job hits, but otherwise is fine. Note being a bootserver really runs the hard disk ragged. Not recommended.
