I had the identical problem (even though the printer was local, not networked).   
The problem is in ppd file from Adobe.  I reported this as a bug to NeXT in PR2  
and after I got 3.0 up.  They recently sent me the following fix.  Meanwhile, I  
got everything to work except for the special features by setting the printer  
type to "Unknown".  It is now set to "Apple LaserWriter Personal NT".  This  
problem may exist with other printers as well.

/NextLibrary/PrinterTypes/English.lproj/Apple_LaserWriter_Personal_NT.ppd
Code in the original file:
*PageSize Letter: "statusdict /lettertray get exec"
*PageSize Legal: "statusdict /legaltray get exec"
*PageSize A4: "statusdict /a4tray get exec"
*PageSize B5: "statusdict /b5tray get exec"
*PageSize LetterSmall: "statusdict /lettertray get exec lettersmall"
*PageSize A4Small: "statusdict /a4tray get exec a4small"

Change it to:
*PageSize Letter: "statusdict begin lettertray end"
*PageSize Legal: "statusdict begin legaltray end"
*PageSize A4: "statusdict begin a4tray end"
*PageSize B5: "statusdict begin b5tray end"
*PageSize LetterSmall: "statusdict begin lettertray end lettersmall"
