Tips on smail building wanted

Has anyone compiled smail 3.1.28 (or greater) on a NeXT running NeXTSTEP 3.0?   
If so, can you offer any pointers or tips for a clean build?  I'm not exactly  
sure on how to configure this one so I can completely remove sendmail and  
replace it with smail.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.
