Is there a document somewhere that describes what "nbuf" actually means? I'm familiar with what it used to do on SunOS (and other BSD-like versions) and on System V. I had assumed that Mach operated like more modern (>= 4.0) releases of SunOS where disk buffers were dynamically allocated from the same pool as process pages - that the disk buffer pool could grow to use most of available memory if processes were using only a small portion. The current conversation makes me think this is not true and that I'd be wise to crank "nbuf" higher on all of our machines that have a local disk. The comment I saw on the net mentioned that it was useful to increase "nbuf" on a machine with a NextDimension because it would improve the Mach messaging speeds. --
