This is a weird problem, and I haven't found the answer yet.

I am working with a network of 4 stations, with #1 the mail server
and #4 the UUCP host. For some reason, UUCP cannot seem to rmail
incoming messages to people on the network like it could before
system 3.0 was installed. Everything ends up in /usr/spool/mqueue
with the following type of header in the message:

Note that stuff about the connection being reset. I haven't found out
what any of it means.

Mail _passing through_ the uucp machine continues on its merry way
unhindered. Other clues are the abundance of sendmail processes:

tybrin4 [~]-3>ps cuax | grep sendmail
root 116 0.0 1.9 1.55M 384K ? S 0:00 sendmail
root 118 0.0 3.0 1.63M 608K ? S 0:02 sendmail
root 274 0.0 3.0 1.63M 608K ? S 0:02 sendmail
root 312 0.0 2.9 1.63M 592K ? S 0:01 sendmail
root 381 0.0 2.9 1.63M 592K ? S 0:01 sendmail
root 650 0.0 2.9 1.63M 592K ? S 0:01 sendmail
root 852 0.0 2.9 1.63M 584K ? S 0:01 sendmail
root 1023 0.0 2.8 1.63M 576K ? S 0:00 sendmail
root 1073 0.0 2.7 1.55M 552K ? S 0:00 sendmail
root 1148 0.0 2.7 1.55M 552K ? S 0:00 sendmail
-------------------------------------------------------------------
There used to only one sendmail process going, maybe two at most at
times.

Other info: This is an excerpt from a mailq listing:

The mail system works like it did before the 3.0 upgrade in all other
respects. I used the SNS application to set up the mail system. (I
noticed that now /usr/spool/mail mounted in the / domain as
tybrin:/usr/spool/mail instead of in the client domains as
mailhost:/usr/spool/mail. I have tried both this new way and the old
way and the result is the same.)

I have been able to successfully telnet to the mail server with the
smtp argument (telnet tybrin1 smtp). This seems to work fine and an
EXPN on my name works.

Here is how the what 'mount' says about /usr/spool/mail:

tybrin4 [docs]-31>nidump fstab /
tybrin1:/users /Net nfs rw,net 0 0

tybrin1:/docs /Net nfs bg,intr,net 0 0

tybrin1:/LocalApps /Net nfs bg,intr,net 0 0

tybrin1:/scratch/pub /Net nfs bg,intr,net 0 0

tybrin2:/LocalApps /Net nfs bg,intr,net,mnttimeo=5,timeo=14 0 0

tybrin4:/LocalApps /Net nfs bg,intr,net,mnttimeo=5,timeo=14 0 0

tybrin4:/local /Net nfs bg,intr,net,mnttimeo=5,timeo=14 0 0

tybrin3:/local /Net nfs bg,intr,net,mnttimeo=5,timeo=14 0 0

tybrin2:/local /Net nfs bg,intr,net,mnttimeo=5,timeo=14 0 0

tybrin1:/local /Net nfs bg,intr,net 0 0

tybrin1:/code /Net nfs bg,intr,net 0 0

tybrin1:/LocalLibrary /LocalLibrary nfs
rw,bg,timeo=14,mnttimeo=5,intr,noquota 0 0

tybrin1:/usr/spool/mail /usr/spool/mail nfs rw,bg,mnttimeo=5,timeo=14
0 0

---------------------------------------------------------------------

(If anybody sees anything else bad that I am doing, let me know.)
Anyway, there's /usr/spool/mail's mount on the last line.

If you've read to here, thanks. I have scoured everything scourable
trying to find an answer. Any clues or hints or outright answers to
why this problem exists are welcome.

Please send them to ...uunet!sci34hub!tybrin4!holli!me, since, of
course, uunet!sci34hub!tybrin4!trey ends up being deferred and lost
in mqueue
