sendmail and MX records

I have been told that my sendmail does not understand MX records, so that
I cannot send mail to xyy@undergrad.math.uwaterloo.ca on my campus; it says
that Host undergrad.math is down.

I am still running NeXT OS 2.1 with sendmail version 5.52.

Is there an easy way to upgrade sendmail or change my sendmail.cf 
or should I wait till I upgrade to NeXT OS 3.0 (3.1)?
