I encountered this promblem once. You may try this:
	Edit the file Active.mbox/mbox and scan the mail-header for
	non-ASCII characters (everything but [A-Za-z.()<> and so on].
	REMOVE this chars.
I had a ''Reply to'' field containing some german umlauts---This killd Mail.app
