unable to read floppy disks

The internal floppy disk drive in my NeXTstation turbo color is giving
me trouble. All of a sudden I can not read floppies that have been
used with no trouble in the past. After inserting a diskette I get a
panel informing me that the floppy disk is unreadable. If I choose
to initialize the disk I get another panel indicating:"Error while
initializing disk: disk initialization failed", this last panel appears
after approximately 20 minutes! How can I figure out if this is a
hardware or software problem? Thanks!
